Rachel’s setting her sights on the London Marathon!
After slipping a disc in her back, Rachel Edmunds, 40, was inactive and struggling to walk 500m. Now losing a mighty 12st 7lbs, Rachel is set to do something she never thought possible; running 26.2 miles in the Virgin Money London Marathon.
“In 2014, I slipped a disc in my back which left me in incredible pain. I was inactive and couldn’t walk more than 500m without feeling out of breath and needing to stop to catch it. I knew it was being made worse by my excess weight but I had no motivation to take the problem into my own hands.
“I remember the final straw. I went to an international rugby match with my husband and two young children, and I couldn’t fit through the turnstile and had to use the disabled entrance. I’ve never been so humiliated.
Starting my Slimming World journey
“I was so nervous when I joined Slimming World with my friend. I needn’t have been. I got a fantastic warm welcome from the group and Barbara, my Consultant. I was shocked at my starting weight of 22st 9lbs but I was determined to get down to target.
I started following Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan and began swapping my oil-laden convenience foods for homemade spaghetti carbonara, jacket potatoes and big breakfasts. Now I swap my takeaways for ‘fakeaways’ and use all fresh ingredients. It’s changed the way I prepare and cook my meals!
“I reached my target of 10st 2lbs and I’ve never felt better. I started walking the dog further and further and before I knew it, I could walk her without stopping. I took on the ‘couch to 5k’ running app and I used that to build up my distance slowly. I’ve completed several 10k races but I’ve decided to run my first marathon for Cancer Research UK as part of the Slimming World team. It’s always been a part of my dream to run the marathon and I can’t actually believe I am!
“I can’t wait for the atmosphere on race day and to cross the finish line. Achieving this lifelong ambition would never have been possible before losing weight and it’s all thanks to Slimming World. I’m excited to give something back and raise money for Cancer Research UK.”
Anyone who would like to sponsor the Slimming World Marathon team can do so by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/SWMarathonTeam2017. Money raised will go towards Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Each year the slimming club’s fundraising arm SMILES support a charity partner, and this is the fourth year that Slimming World’s members and Consultants have voted to support Cancer Research UK.
