Dirty rice reimagined
Combining the smoky Southern flavours of traditional dirty rice with the classic Caribbean comfort food favourite, rice and peas, our new dirty rice recipe is a deliciously moreish dish that works as a satisfying side or a quick and easy midweek meal.
We’ve used gammon and black beans (which are usually called peas in Jamaica) to add extra tasty texture to our dirty rice ’n’ peas, but dirty rice is so versatile and easy to throw together that it’s great for using up any leftover meat or vegetables. Just chuck all your ingredients in a pan with some stock and spices and, before you know it, you’ll have a winner of a dinner to feed your hungry tribe.

Make your own Cajun seasoning
Our dirty rice ’n’ peas recipe uses a classic Cajun seasoning mix. Although you can buy ready made seasonings in most supermarkets, these often contain unexpected ingredients like sugar and oil that can send your weight loss off track. Luckily, it’s super simple to make your own slimming-friendly cajun seasoning using herbs and spices you already have in your spice rack.
Just mix 1 tsp each of:
- chilli powder
- ground cumin
- dried oregano
- garlic salt
- ground coriander
- ground ginger
- cumin seeds
- fennel seeds
- yellow mustard seeds
- dried thyme
And there you have it, a home-made slimming-friendly Cajun seasoning to use in a whole host of spicy recipes, including our Cajun chicken pasta, vegetable jambalaya – and, of course, our dirty rice ’n’ peas!
