As a child, I was bigger than my friends, and I had some tricky times at school because of it. I’d wear dark or baggy clothes to try to hide my shape. My size affected my confidence, and I always felt quite isolated.

Through my 20s, I put on more weight, and I felt as though I’d let myself go. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror and felt uncomfortable in my clothes. I wanted to feel better within myself and knew I needed to make changes.

I was at a really low point when my mum asked if I wanted to join Slimming World. I’m so glad I said yes. I felt at ease straight away in group – everyone was so lovely and welcoming. My Consultant talked me through Food Optimising and answered any questions I had. Everyone was there for the same reason, and I no longer felt alone. My only regret was not starting sooner!

Filling my plate – and losing weight!

The thing I like most about Slimming World is that it isn’t restrictive. It’s a lifestyle change and a slightly different approach to cooking real, everyday food. I enjoy making all sorts of delicious meals and love being able to fill my plate! Food Optimising is simple and flexible, and it works around me and my husband – unlike some plans, there’s no need for me to eat different meals. Our favourite Slimming World recipe is cheeseburger pasta, which is quick, easy and so tasty! Another one of our favourites is cottage pie.

Challenging myself with activity

I’ve always enjoyed walking, and since I joined Slimming World, I’ve become much more active. I go on long walks at the weekend and challenge myself to walk that bit further. I’ve also joined a gym and get some steps in there, as well as working on my strength using weights.

My Slimming World group has been a huge part of my journey. I look forward to going along every week and catching up with the other members, who I now call my friends. I make sure I stay for IMAGE Therapy – where you have the opportunity to talk about your week and any challenges you’ve had – as I find it really helps to keep me accountable and sets me up for a successful week ahead.

Celebrating success – on and off the scales

My biggest weight loss challenge has been staying focused during hard times, and I’ve learnt techniques in group to help me avoid emotional eating. I’ve also come to realise that one bad day doesn’t undo all your hard work. I simply draw a line under it and start afresh the following day.

Another challenge for me is not to just focus on the scales every week. Sometimes the numbers don’t go the way that we want, but I remind myself that non-scale victories count, too – things like my clothes fitting better, and feeling happier in myself, are just as important.

My biggest moment so far? The first time I walked into a high-street shop and bought clothes I loved, instead of ordering online or buying something just because it fitted me. I’ve dropped five dress sizes, and I still automatically pick up ‘oversized’ clothes sometimes. It’s hard for my mind to keep up with my weight loss, but seeing how far I’ve come is an incredible feeling.

I joined Slimming World in March 2023, and my life has changed so much since then. I’ve lost over 6st (38kg) and I’m loads more confident – I don’t worry about people staring at me these days. I used to feel sad and insecure, now I’m happier and more likely to do things outside of my comfort zone. I’m looking forward to carrying on my weight loss journey and seeing where I can get to in the next 12 months.
